St. Maarten/St. Martin Day celebrated on Wednesday |

PHILIPSBURG - The island of St. Maarten/St. Martin celebrated St. Maarten Day on Wednesday in grand fashion. It was also the 50th anniversary of the islands celebration of St. Maarten Day.

The time table for the schedule of events were not kept, but it all worked out just fine as all of the events managed to have been carried out safely and overall, the weather assisted and it turned out to be a beautiful day for the celebration of St. Maarten Day 2009.
The official activities got off to a start with a church service at the New Testament Baptiste Church in Philipsburg.
Dignitaries from throughout the Netherlands Antilles attended Wednesday's church service.
Also in attendance was a delegation from Sister City Tallahassee in the United States, the delegation was led by the Executive Director of the Tallahassee/St. Maarten Foundation Arthur Lugisse.
After church the officials gathered in-front of the Government Administration building where they gathered under a white tent and listened to performances from various schools that was centered around the theme, "Our Culture embraces us all".
Forming part of the St. Maarten Day display were cultural dances including performances from the Dance Clients of Sister Basilia Center. After the performances, the delegation of officials were escorted to the Bellevue Border were wreaths were laid at the Monument.
After the wreath laying ceremony, they were escorted this time to the Festival Village where they were they were served lunch with more cultural performances being conducted at the center of the Festival Village.
The parade of uniformed troops then followed. They arrived in the festival Village and gave over 300 people who were in attendance, an entertaining display.
In the afternoon there were a number of family based activities that also centered around the Festival Village and the Little League Stadium. These activities included a kite competition, Old Time Games, and a Domino Competition.
There was a Cultural Parade in Philipsburg which culminated with the Group Presentations in the Festival Village. A fire Works Display and Steelpan Fete, concluded the St. Maarten/St. Martin Day activities on Wednesday.
