PHILIPSBURG - The Cannegieter street in the vicinity of the Windward Island Bank and the Scotia Bank, was temporarily opened on Friday afternoon.
The road is being opened at this time to facilitate the heavy flow of traffic that Philipsburg and surrounding areas are currently being affected by.
It is the intention that when construction work resumes on the 7th of January, work will once again begin on the Cannegieter street.
This will entail the laying of the final layer of asphalt and all of the accompanying finishing touches.
Present for Fridays soft opening was the Commissioner of public works Theo Heyliger and Mr. Kurt Ruan, Head of New Projects Development & Planning as well as representatives of Windward Roads, contractor for the project.
The second and final phase of the Cannegieter street project from the Virgon building to the Jubilee Library will be closed off as of Tuesday January 12th 2010 for a period of two months.
According to Mr. Ruan, the entire beautification project of the Cannegieter street, is scheduled to be completed by mid March 2010. Also opened on Friday was the Cayhill road, much to the relief of many road users.
However one thing that is increasingly obvious is that with the opening up of newly designed roads, there will be less parking which have resulted in many drivers taking desperate chances to park for a while.
Some drivers even used the fire station in Philipsburg as a parking alternative. They were towed when a fire engine was blocked from entering. The parking time in many areas have also been limited to fifteen (15) minutes.
