National Alliance clean sweeps DP |

PHILIPSBURG - It was a sea of white on Saturday morning in front of the Government Administration Building when the National Alliance leader and his team, greeted supporters after receiving a strong mandate from the electorate to complete the process toward Country Status for St. Maarten.
The National Alliance won Friday's final parliamentary elections of the Country, Netherlands Antilles, clean sweeping their opponents the PPA and the DP.
Friday's victory is being viewed as an historic one for the party as its the first time that they will bear the full responsibility for the representation of the island in parliament.
This loss for the DP is also their first in over 40 years, as they have always managed to maintain at least one seat in the Antillian Parliament.
National Alliance leader Commissioner William Marlin said thank you to the people and his team for their support in the campaign and the process of governing.
He also told his team as they celebrated that the hard work now lay ahead pointing to the looming date for constitutional change and the work that is needed to be completed.
Marlin also made special mention of Commissioner Theo Heyliger, thanking him for his support on the campaign trail. He also stated that the NA team had a 12th candidate in Councilman Louie Laveist. He said so in thanking him as well for his public support for the party.
The Councilman also stated on Saturday morning that Friday's victory at the polls for the National Alliance, was a sweet victory for him stating that, "God does not sleep".
The former DP Commissioner looked comfortable within the folds of the National Alliance on Sunday morning as he waved to cheering supporters who applauded the support that he gave to the National Alliance.
Although the National Alliance received a clear mandate from the electorate on Friday, they also gave strong support to the leader of the DP, former Commissioner Sarah Wescot-Williams.
on Statia, the Democratic Party won the election with 602 votes and the opposition PLP got 341 votes. 962 people voted there in Friday's election.
On Bonaire the UPB of Ramoncito Booi got 2 of the 3 seats and the DP of Jopie Abraham got the remaining 1 seat. Then on Curacao, the PAR party won the elections.
On Saba the WIPM party and their returning candidate Will Johnson, won the election for parliament. In percentage points the WIPM led with 63% and the opposition SLP with 36%.
Former Senator Johnson stated that he is looking forward to providing strong representation in parliament for his island of Saba. He also stated that he was elated with the support that he obtained a the polls from young Saban's.
