Government meets with school bus owners and drivers, short and long term solutions discussed |

PHILIPSBURG - A general meeting with school bus owners and drivers was held at the John Larmoni Center on Thursday afternoon.
Also attending the meeting were the principals and representatives of schools on the island.
The meeting which was called for by the control, inspection and security department, discussed a number of pressing issues within the scope of the transportation of the islands students.
Head of the department Mr. Shervin Fredrick stated that some pressing matters that could be addressed resulting in immediate improvements was addressed first on Thursday.
These points include:
- Speeding Busses
- School busses operating without license plates
- Student pick up and drop off
- Morning drop off MPC/St. Dominic/SMVTS
- School bus destination name boards
- Dress code school bus drivers
- General responsibilities/Authority school bus drivers
- Children seated while being transported
- Overcrowding
- Children joyriding on school bus
- Safety aspects
- Difficult students
- Vehicle complications
- Contacting the dept.
The meeting comes in the wake of the recent incident involving a student who used a gun whilst on a school bus.
This incident resulted in heightened calls from the community for solutions to the increasing problem of students and weapons.
During Thursday's meeting, school bus improvement plans for the mid and long term, was also taken up into the discussions which was said to have taken place in a cordial manner, These plans include:
- School bus committee
- School bus agreement
- School bus monitoring (GPS) system
- School bus driver destination/student identification
- School bus controller(s)/Control Unit
- School bus driver manual
According to Mr. Shervin Fredrick, the discussions aimed at finding solutions will continue in the future.
