Former police officer Koeiman arrested on St. Maarten

PHILIPSBURG - Gregory Rogelio Koeiman a former police officer was arrested by the St. Maarten police on Wednesday. Sources in Curacao state that Koeiman is wanted for questioning on Curacao in a murder case.

Koeiman is now a person of interest in the fatal shooting in Roodeweg Curacao during the carnival parade which left musician Gabriel Santos Castil aka Gaby dead.

Wednesday's arrest of the former police officer on St. Maarten was confirmed by police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson. It is not clear why Koeiman flew to St. Maarten on Wednesday but he was arrested on arrival.

According to a report from Gonzalo Cuales of Z-86 radio in Curacao, the shooting took place when Gabriel Santos Castil decided to come off of a truck on which he was playing to tell his ex-girlfriend to go home.

The ex-girlfriend who has not been identified, was standing along the road watching the parade go by. Her new boyfriend was also in close proximity and decided that he would not tolerate what was happening.

He then approached the victim and shot him in the head. It is said that Gabriel Santos Castil died on the spot even though ambulance personnel still took the fatally shot victim to the hospital.

This was one of two incidents that marred the 40th anniversary celebrations of Curacao's carnival. The other incident involved the shooting in the leg of a un-named 20 year old. When the police went to his car they also found two guns.

Former means preceding in time; OR having once, or previously, been;
This means
he once was but is no longer an officer. I don't know how many papers or news
blogs you have read but everyone of them would have posted their heading with
"FORMER COP"; senasational or not they would do it, it is what gets
their news/blogs read. The problem here is NOT sxmislandtimes mentioning this
information but the problem is that this situation happened in the first place.
See as a cop and politician you should be the type of person that is looking for
a solution, NOT the type of person that is looking to cast blame. As a human
being stand up for what is right at all cost, even when no one is looking, and
not for your own gratification and most of all call a spade a spade. He is a
formwer cop and those are the facts whether we want to hear/see them or not.
What needs to change are the interviewing skills, the psychological test and all
the training cops in the Antilles have to go through because with the likes of
these types of people on the force or getting kicked off the force, something is
terribly wrong.

I think that the main point of contention has been brought forward here. The
strict criteria of the past have been throw in the garbage bin. Nowadays persons
whose parents and siblings are involved in criminal activities with multiple
sentencings are being admitted to the police academy like everybody else. Back
in the days this could NEVER happen.

Mind you, I am not saying that a youth
from a criminal family cannot choose the right path and become a good cop. But
isn't it realistic to say that he/she will more likely be subject to pressure
from there immediate surroundings to get involved with the wrong stuff? The
questions are:
1. Should the police force put it's integrity at risk by
recruiting such individuals?
2. Should the community be subjected to that
risk?...

Koeiman and his fellow x-police partna Kressman were locked up from the early
1990's. They were wolves in sheep clothing. Police at day and thugs at night.
Koeiman is very smooth with the ladies. While he was sitting out his time in
Point Blanche prison, he managed to befriend and have a relationship with a then
young prison psychologist who worked there. She brought everything he need into
the prison. After he got out, they remain together for a while until she woke up
and realized he was really a criminal. Its a long story made short. He got
deeply involved in the drug trade. He used many women to assist with his dirty
work. He has informants in the police force as well as immigration and customs.
Very easy for him to get pass security. A very dangerous man. he will laugh with
you today and then tomorrow you could be reported missing or dead with no leads
to how it happened. He need to be put away for life. So hope the officers do
their work well. If he is found innocent, investigate his drug ring.

Maarten and the island times said that this person was piked up for a murder at
Sangs Supermarket. And it turned out later that he was picked up for a shooting

After reading, I decided I must add my two cents it is so amazing that people on
this Island make a big fuss when a picture is posted about someone who commit a
crime, or is a suspect in the case, innocent until proven guilty but they will
sit down and watch all kind of shows on cable, satelite where they put the
pictures and they talk good about them, now we have Mr Samuel who is doing a
tremendous job of keeping you informed of everything that happen, we want to
criticize, we dont have to threaten or say anything negative to him that is his
jobif it was your child or family member it would not be a problem, and what the
officer needs to do is start to do an inventory inthe police force and put his
officers in serious courses, becuase their mouths are filthy when they arrived
on a scene especially where there are young people involved, or even in the
police station they scream and dont show no kind of respect for that uniform
they are wearing and you could imagine when they have spectators the show gets
more hot, I know of former police officers who until now will speak to you as a
human being and they was willing to look for a solution, not try to show off and
make matters worse, fight for increase in their salaries if they lack money, so
they dont get involved with wrong doings, but again they are humans so do no go
covering up for the police, the bad apples has damaged ur names, young men do
not get me wrong . the course to become a police is good, but when they put on
that uniform is where they forget what their task is.
This young man has done
some things in life, so he will have to be punish of course, but some people
just need help locking them up and not giving them the help they need, it will
always come back up and they would do what they feels is good at that moment,
but taking a life is not cool at all, these young men thinks having a gun and
shooting for the fun makes them a man,we really need to meet our generation
wherever they are and have talks with them and involved them with the change you
want to make, so they can feel that even if they on the block they have a self
worth, so lets start with ours here so we can make a difference, young men can
make mistakes, but they also deserve a second chance, don't condemn them or
write them off after their mistakes, but if they done a crime they must do the
time!!!!!

I am not defending Mr. Papparrazi but news is news and there is a way to report
it professionaly.
There is still no reason to insuate that somehow he won't
have any hands to write.
Globally, reporting the news is a business and a job
and he is doing his job, He never said that the suspect comitted the crime. He
simply listed the facts.
If we are too shameful of hearing the truth about our
characters then we should try to live better lives.

Mr Samuel Allen, I applaud you for your website and your reporting. However I
must say that your website and the others like smn-news creates alot of hate and
slander in our little community. It is necessary to report crime and you can put
photo's and print full names but its the slander that comes in the comments is
what is damaging to people's family and the like. Would anyone be happy to hear
their family being slandered by these cowards that can't even publish their real
names. Its the websites that have made this society become what it is today. Why
allow people to go on the internet and slander the innocent? Does that do you

We can all speculate but that reaches nowhere. None of us was there when the
crime was committed, so we depend on the information delivered to us by the
press. The only negative part about this newscast was that the full name and
picture was issued, which according to me should not be done until a verdict has
been passed. Besides that, the report does not differ much from the newspapers
with the exception that the newspapers report that the victim was shot in the
chest. If there is one post on this page that is truly intruiging, it's the post
from the potential "eye witness", who vividly describes the scene. I
wonder if the police in Curacao already questioned him/her or if they stepped
forward as responsible citizens should. As for the post by Mr. Rogers, I think
the fact that the suspect is a former police officer as reported, you should not
jump to wash your hands clean by stating this was 16 years ago. As suggested by
others in this thread, you should take a pro-active approach and ensure that
your unit has integrity because you were an officer when the suspect and his
partner were arrested 16 years ago! To all other people in this thread, have a
wonderful weekend!
