AcDSC_1696_4PHILIPSBURG - Wednesday's meeting of the Central Committee of St. Maarten, did not go as was planned by the Democratic Party (DP) of St. Maarten.

In a press release that was issued on Wednesday after the meeting, the leader of the (DP) Council Woman Sarah Wescot-Williams stated that the meeting that was requested by the Democratic Party to hear from the Executive Council regarding its position on (incidental) subsidies/investments turned out to be a joke.

The granting of subsidies by government she stated, is regulated by the Subsidy Ordinance St. Maarten and the subsidizing of religious institutions regulated by the State Regulation (Staatsregeling).

This meeting was requested by the DP, considering the public spat between government and organizations such as the Carnival Foundation and the Heineken Regatta Organizers.

She further noted that in answering the Democratic Party Faction's questions on the budget, the government had also informed the Island Council that for the information requested on the subsidy to the Foundation for Government Buildings, the Island Council(!) should contact the Foundation's president, Mr. Kurt Ruan. Now imagine that.

In addition, government has still not given its position on the support to religious organizations, a matter that came to the fore with the issue of construction of a Methodist Church in Belvedere.

These and other matters were raised by members of the Island Council Council Woman Sarah Wescot-Williams also stated. The faction of the Democratic Party also requested an overview of the list of all subsidies, included in the draft budget 2010.

When this list was finally provided, and questions posed to the Executive Council, the only member of the Executive Council present was Commissioner Hyacinth Richardson Wescot-Williams noted.

She went on to state that Commissioner Blackman graced us with his presence for a few minutes, however the Executive Council did invite several senior officials (department heads and sector directors) to be present.

Not on one single topic was either Commissioner Blackman or Richardson able or willing to explain the government's position. Worse yet, the civil servants were not allowed to say a word to explain anything either.

The Central Committee was told that the answers will be provided in writing and upon insistence of the Democratic Party, the meeting was told that answers by the Executive Council will be provided THIS WEEK!

She then lamented that the government is making a mockery of the democratic system, and that while not perfect, is what we have today. She added that yet, these same members of government are clamoring for a change of the system to a dualistic one. With this mentality, we think not.

The (DP) Leader also stated that they asked about transfers between budget items and the stipulations that must be adhered to. No answer!

Plans for the Carnival Foundation for 2010. No answer.

Subsidy St. Maarten Housing Development Foundation. No answer.

You can agree or disagree with government on their policy, but if they have none, what role is an island council to play?

She concluded by noting that Government can act within the constrains of the law or outside of these constrains, but if they feel they have no account to give to the island council, whose most important tool is that of the budget and budgetary control, what role is the island council to play?

Is this what "transparency in Government" and "good governance"
is all about? I have never seen such a bunch of arrogant people in my life. How
dare they sit there, after all they said about the previous government and now
want to play "Lord and Masters" and give account to no one? They are
there to give answers. They are absolutely no better than the previous EXCO they
blamed of all sort of corruption.

It is sad that in just a few short months
they have succeeded in making a total mess of things. These guys just don't get
it. When in government you have to govern and give account for your actions.
This is not a private company (own business) that they are running. This is not
about Sarah getting a dose of her own medicine. They knew what Sarah and the
previous EXCO was doing wrong. Then they should stop acting like children and do
better.

This is about "practicing what you preach". This is about
"knowing better and doing better". This is about the people' affairs.
They knew how to bash the previous EXCO and what do they themselves do? 10 times
worse than the previous EXCO.

To all those who keep hitting on Sarah, the
previous EXCO or God knows who else, please get a grip on yourselves. THIS IS A
SERIOUS MATTER. Our livelihood is at stake here. Your "self righteous"
leaders have already failed the people in just a few months and are looking like
perfect fools. They are making us the laughing stock of the Neth. Antilles if
not the world. With the exception of W. Marlin, they cannot give proper speeches
even when reading a statement, they never say what they mean and always have to
correct their statements, continuously make the wrong decisions and cannot make
up financial budgets. Are these the people to lead us into country status? I
surely hope not. Wake up.

Hahaha   |200.7.63.xxx |2010-03-11 02:39:49
They are more than a joke, they are not ready at all the lead this country. It's
only because of the " Smartest" politician Louie Laveist is why N.A. is
in government. They are lone rangers in office handling the peoples business,
and not giving a damn what they think. Thats what i like about Sarah she is a
good politician she does her research first then bring it out. These guys think
they are gods and we must be glad that they are their to help us. One simple
word the are not " ready " they lack knowledge and a lot also, they are
embarissing this island with their " Victory". Maybe you wanted new
blood in government, but this blood is not at all better than the old blood,
they are incompetant commissioners except for blackman. They need to sit back,
watch, and learn and then come back. They go to much on personal thinking, If
you are in polotics there are certain issues that have to be dealt with
politically and not what you as a party think is good.
Give Me a break Sarah   |204.14.248.xxx |2010-03-11 07:18:25
If the DP didn't leave the running of government in such a mess the NA would
have answers. Did Sarah leave any policies in place? If so were they functional.
Come on people! She knows exactly what questions to ask that the NA cannot give
account for because it was not taken care of in the past 10 years of her
government's tenure. It is strange how people are quick to call the NA arrogant
and incompetent but NOBODY questions the joke of a minimum wage, the Mullet Bay
eye sore, the fact all domain lands are in the hands of people who are using it
for apartments (Ramona Thomas) and for enriching themselves (Spadaro & Erato).
When are we going to admit that the NA has a tough job in cleaning up the mess?
Health care, education, infra structure, marketing........Give them a chance to
research, plan and deliver. I can guarantee you one thing if NA is in power for
10 years the people of SXM will definitely be better of than they are today.
