PHILIPSBURG - "It is sad, very sad, that some people would deliberately take a decision of government meant for the good of our youth and create a big controversy from it about the separation of church and state.

" These were the initial comments of Commissioner Frans Richardson regarding the ongoing debate about remarks he made at the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Methodist Church building in Belvedere last Saturday.

He reiterated that the decision of the Executive Council, taken unanimously, to assist the Methodist community in the construction of a new chapel in the Belvedere area to serve Dutch Quarter, Middle Region and environs, was meant as compensation for an oversight of government.

"With our assistance with the building of this church, we hope to resolve all concerns arising from our decision to fulfill our promises," the Commissioner stated.

"Once completed, it will serve as the bedrock of Christian teachings in this community. With so much happening in our neighborhoods, an additional place of worship is never too much."

According to the Commissioner, contrary to what has been reported in the media about his address, he never said there should be no separation between church and state, but actually emphasized the need for stronger cooperation and understanding between the two institutions which have perhaps the greatest impact on our daily lives.

"I suggested that maybe the new church congregation and the managers of the new sports field will agree to join to create recreational programs for our community's youth.

In this way, we will be better equipped to help our youth and students to become better socially and educationally by facilitating them with regular inter-generational contacts that would help them to grow as responsible citizens; facilitating parents with a better knowledge of their child's friends and parents; to encourage our children's development with their norms and values."

"When the church and the field have been built, I said, 'I believe if there's a fight or problem on the field, they can all come here to the house of God to resolve their conflict."

"I also said they always talk about separation of church and government, but I know every year, every so often, the government calls on the church to pray for it. Why is it OK to pray for you, but it is not OK to build a temple to pray in?"

Finally, I expressed gratitude to the representatives of the Methodist church "for their patience and their useful recommendations, paving the way for better mutual understanding between the church and government."

"These are the facts; these are the exact words I said at the ground-breaking ceremony. I make no apologies for the decision of government to correct what was an obvious mistake. I make no apologies neither for calling for closer cooperation between government and the church for the positive development of our youth and of our island.

However, I also understand the sensitivity in some quarters about the issue of the separation of church and state. This is a problem all over the world, even in the U.S. where President Obama has continued the "Faith-based initiative" of former President George W. Bush, which many see as an attempt to erase the separation between church and state.

The separation of church and state is not only a legal and political doctrine to keep both institutions independent of each other; it also has a biblical foundation. Jesus Christ himself established that separation when he commanded His followers to "Give unto Caesar what is Caesar's and unto God, what belongs to God."

There are several European countries where the state subsidizes the churches – Belgium and Greece being two good examples. In fact, some countries considered to be very liberal in outlook such as Sweden, Norway, and Germany, also do the same or something very similar although no one would ever accuse them of not practicing separation of church and state.

Similarly, when the island government pays teachers' salaries and other subsidies for religious schools, nobody sees that as an affront on the separation of church and state.

I acknowledge that we are in a political season, and that some politicians are so desperate that they will stop at nothing to undermine the good that this government has been doing and will continue to strive to do.

Let me state very clearly that government has not instituted any new policy to nullify the separation between church and state; far from it. But there are those with their own political agenda who want to mislead the people in thinking so.

But this is not about politics for me; this is about recognizing the role the church has to play in our society, especially in the development of our youth, and doing whatever we can to assist in achieving this common goal.

I have no doubt at all that a better mutual understanding and cooperation between church and state will result in a better St. Maarten for all. This is what it is all about: a better future for ALL."

Not an favour or against ,yet?   |200.7.56.xxx |2010-03-10 17:13:05
I am not in favour Government building any church for any faith basedgroup be it
Christians or others, this can open not only a legal pandora box, but will
create the same chicken leg, sink and blocks mentality of the DP over the people
of Sint Maarten. The Methodist Church is not living according to the principle
and teaching of Jesus Christ, They are accepting handouts, nothing is better
than when faith based group can demonstrate nature as God people, to serve it's
community and not take away what's theirs. When Government have to build you a
church is speaks a moth full of the integrity of your institution. This is as
Government building the house of God. By the way I am a devoted Christian
believes in The Lord Jesus Christ not a religious person sitting in church
Sundays after Saturdays and have no relationship with God true his son.
Notwithstanding these facts churches must stay as independent as possible have
their own monies and feed the poor and fatherless do things in the community,
not take away community tax dollars. I agree with the the commissioner that
Churches has been part of our culture and what his intention is to setup a
morale institution amidst the jungle of life. Now to those separatistas, why
didn't you'll protest all those snackbar run by Julian R (JOCKEYMAN)under
disguise of Talking Drum Foundation, making noise and not contributing to morale
values in the community. As to the Methodist they should be a shamed, instead of
leading by example by building a church, why don't they sell or develop that
piece of property on backstreet and use it as collateral to finance their
church.

For all the christian you saying that you are, you are no better than non cause
if you were a true christian and if you ahd a relationship with God through his
son, you would keep your mouth shut and let GOD handle it cause look at it
anyway you want now you are talking down a house of the lord and the lord did
say that his followers should come together.
In everythign you do ask yourself
what would jesus do and than you would know keep quiet, do not go bashing any
religion.
Not about Rollocks   |200.7.56.xxx |2010-03-11 17:19:18
This isn't about Rollocks( who's a jack*** in my opinion)but about the taxpayers
monies being used to build a church. Let's get real here and call an ace anace.
Commissioner you messed up and if you don't accept it, you'll lose the next
election big times. People hate hypocrites and that's what you're making
yourself to be! Shut up for now and PRAY this blows over. You lost my support do
as you really showed your colors!
SHUT UP   |200.7.55.xxx |2010-03-10 19:17:02
I think you should shut up Frans. Is like everytime you open your mouth, you
put your foot in it. How can you talk about church and state as being one? Now
you talking "this is not politics for me" Its not about you Frans, its
about the people. Soon i will come for Government to build a mosque for the
community. Enjoy your short lived victory. Just wait and see.
Anonymous   |200.7.49.xxx |2010-03-10 21:45:56
Frans, please keep your mouth shut from now on, you are just making matters
worse. This is not about "an additional" place of worship, this is about
who is building it. Which promise are you fulfilling? By chance that for votes
you will insure that that district become mainly Methodist? Asking the
"COUNCIL OF CHURCHES" (all denominations) to pray for us should not have
to be compensated with a building. THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE HERE FOR, to pray for
us with no strings attached or did something change along the way?

Am I to
understand that "THE CHURCH", “CHRISTIANITY” consists of only the
Methodist church? "It will serve as the bedrock of Christian teachings in
this community" What about the Adventists? Don't they have a church in that
same community? What about the Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists,
Pentecostals, etc. etc. Are they not of THE ALMIGHTY also? Do they serve another
GOD than the Methodists do? Don't they have any positive input in the well being
of our youth? Don’t tell us about the USA and European Countries, we are in
SXM. At least they subsidize, we build a complete new church while we don’t
even have an approved budget. Government pays and subsidize teachers of all
denominations, not only Methodists teachers, to educate our children.

Mistakes? Government should not be making so many mistakes that have to be
compensated from OUR pockets, people of all denominations. It was not tolerated
by the previous EXCO. Why should it be tolerated by the present EXCO? No Frans,
please stay out of the media from now on.

N.A. just does not get it, or they are all just being stubborn. Government takes
our tax monies and boldy do what they please with it. Frans you can twist and
turn this issue as much as you like, but what you N.A. have done is wrong. I
hope when the other churches come knocking at your door you open up to them
also. It's edgar lynch is the reason the church is being build. We all know that
he is a N.A man. This move N.A made is unprofessional and shows lack of
knowledge from the party. You can not say government made a mistake in land so
i giving you half a million guilders to make a wrong, right with the people
monies because i'm government. Hyacinth is a joke by himself, very nice man, but
not a politician. Frans trying a thing but he obviously ain't ready yet. Go back
to the drawing table N.A. then come back and say " oh now i understand
".
Silence please   |72.252.11.xxx |2010-03-11 02:28:22
Comm. Richardson please do not waste your breath on this topic any longer. The
press and your enemies are simply looking for dust. Please do not feed them any
information and the issue will die a silent death. DP may call a Island Council
meeting on this topic. However be short, do not feed the hungy lions. Your NA
die hard supporter
Methodist.   |72.252.9.xxx |2010-03-11 05:21:47
Members of the Methodist faith please go back to being humble, givers,
caretakers, and God loving people. We dont really need a church in belvedere, we
need the members to come back to Philipsburg church (it is empty most of the
times). Every community want there own church building, its crazy. We have to
work on getting our members united and stop dividing the membership. Go out and
bring in the young members back to church. If govt want to give you that money
put it in a foundation to help young people, young parents in general. We dont
need another building, fix up those in philipsburg.
unbelievable   |216.237.75.xxx |2010-03-11 06:04:22
government refers to an "oversight" that needs to be corrected to the
tune of 500,000naf at the taxpayers expense. It is unbelievable that nobody is
held accountable for this mistake. In any business, making a mistake of 500,000
naf is no laughing matter. Frans please tell us how did this
"oversight" happen and what will happen to the people responsible for
the oversight.
locolavida   |159.53.110.xxx |2010-03-11 09:27:41
Boy Frans, hope you are feeling all the love coming your way for it would seems
you're a one man show and that the decision was all your doing by yourself.
You've explained yourself well enough- now zip it.
SXMer   |190.124.219.xxx |2010-03-11 11:44:20
Frans you cannot lead or run our island. Didnt you graduate from LTS of MPC? U
need to get back into school and learn somethings. Church and State should not
be together, spin it now if you want.

NA is failing us, not the NEW BEGINNING
Anonymous   |200.7.58.xxx |2010-03-11 12:46:18
Silennt death ? That is what you think ask Roy Marlin how he get punish with 8
votes when he came down belvedere with the same arrogant attidude in 2006.
Stop lying Mr Commissioner   |200.7.56.xxx |2010-03-11 17:11:25
The worst you could have done Frans boy is start lying and now continue lying.
You know full well that hwne this problem started it was because EDGAR LYNCH
started the building in the dome in Belvedere WITHOUT A PERMIT. Ask him for the
emails he send to Joe Richardson about this project. When Public Works issued a
building stop back some time by Buncamper as acting Director it was Sarah and
Theo that said we'll not demolish the church and let's find a solution. It was
then agreed upon to find a parcel of land and see if they could help with the
45.000,- already invested in the dome WITHOUT A PERMIT by EDGAR LYNCH as ring
leader and Rev Brissett. So when you want to talk about mistake say exactly what
happened and stop LYING AND PLAYING POLITICS. Your people (EDGAR LYNCH) made the
blunder and then you lie and try to fix it by blaming others. Shame on you son
and to use god's name only makes it worst. remember this saying son "Better
to remain silent and let people wonder how dumb you are, than to speak and
remove all doubt"
What a new beginning!
