PHILIPSBURG - The island council of St. Maarten was scheduled to meet on Thursday morning at the Claude Wathey Legislative Hall of the Government Administration Building. However that meeting was postponed due to the lack of a quorum.
The meeting was called at the request of the opposition Democratic Party (DP), to discuss issue pertaining to the draft 2010 budget for the island territory.
The (DP) had also planned to discuss the much talked about CFT report and their recent discussion with the island council of St. Maarten.
Along with the (DP) faction, Commissioner Theo Heyliger also attended on Thursday morning and was available to be apart of Thursday's meeting of the island council.
The leader of the (DP) Council Lady Sarah Wescot-Williams has stated that the the part is concerned about the impact for St. Maarten for breaking the budgetary agreements with the Dutch Government.
She accused the Executive Council of delaying their defence of the draft 2010 budget and being elusive on answering questions about some areas of concern in the budget.
She however noted that their strategy in dealing with the opposition will not stop them, calling their display an indication of total disregard for the people of St. Maarten.
Two members of the Executive Council of St. Maarten were also off island on Thursday when the meeting was scheduled to take place.
