PHILIPSBURG - A group of six trainee police officers from Curacao are in St. Maarten preparing to take note of the operations here and will also be around during the carnival season.
Police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson said the officers will come to work for a month to gather information on the "know-how" of police work in total.
Another police officer is due to join the group but is completing the theoretical part of the training in Curacao and will come to complete the practical section here with the other six officers.
He noted that they will get on the job training during the carnival period. "We are looking forward to in the future for those who have gone to Curacao...to come back and join us and ease the pressure that some of the police officers are going through," Henson said.
Meanwhile, asked about the trainees from the Windward Islands that went to Curacao for police training, Henson disclosed that they have not dropped out of the program and are still active.
He said maybe some dropped out from the immigration section, but the 20 who applied are still doing the course. Seven will be returning to St. Maarten and he hopes the rest will be back to service the community.
"Hopefully by the end of this year, they too will be back in St. Maarten to serve their community," Henson said. He said the recruitment drive for police officers will continue and he hopes those who have the quality to do the job will apply.
