Tourism Director meets with Harbour Group of Companies

POINTE BLANCHE - Tourism was the object of discussion Wednesday between CEO of the Harbour Group of Companies Mark Mingo and the Director of Tourism May ling Chun.

This meeting is seen as a vital one noting the current status of the economy and the role that tourism plays with it.

The matter of the "cruise conversion program" was a point heavily discussed Wednesday with the aim of creating a more structured working relationship, resulting in a more efficient and effective way of promotion the destination St. Maarten.

The island is also seeking to increase the amount of stay over visitors and tapping into the 1.4 million cruise passengers per year will be one way of doing it

Also part of the first meeting between the Director of Tourism and the Harbour CEO was Mr. Gus Priest who currently holds the position of Bureau Head of Product Development.

The efforts being made to maintain the sustainability of the island premier income earner cannot be done without the input of the islands social partners such as the St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA).

The involvement of other sectors will also be needed noted both Harbour CEO Mark Mingo and Tourism Director May Ling Chun.

According to Mrak Mingo, "For too long, the harbour has been seen as separate from the general tourism picture. We look forward to working with Chun who we know to be a very receptive and cooperative person."

He further noted that for the island to be successful at their plans, discussion will have to be held with other players such as the airport and the utility company GEBE, this would facilitate better pl;aning in the interest of the island.

Wednesday's meeting was described as a success.
